Tafelspitz recipe
A comforting, spiced rice and lentil dish.
Ingredients
- 300 g basmati rice
- 100 g yellow lentils
- 2 unit onion
- 1 tbsp ginger
- 4 unit garlic
- 2 unit green chili
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 unit bay leaves
- 3 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 800 ml water
How to make Tafelspitz
- Rinse 250 g of basmati rice and 200 g of yellow lentils under cold water, then soak in water for 30 minutes.
- In a pot, heat 2 tbsp of oil over medium heat. Add 1 sliced onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add 1 tbsp of grated ginger, 4 minced garlic cloves, and 1 chopped green chili. Cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Stir in 1 tsp of turmeric powder, 1 tsp of cumin seeds, and 2 bay leaves. Cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
- Add the soaked rice and lentils to the pot, stirring well to coat in spices.
- Pour in 800 ml of water and add 1 tsp of salt. Stir to combine everything in the pot.
- Cover the pot and cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes until the rice and lentils are tender and the water is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let sit, covered for 5 minutes before serving.
