How to make Tafelspitz

  1. Rinse 250 g of basmati rice and 200 g of yellow lentils under cold water, then soak in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat 2 tbsp of oil over medium heat. Add 1 sliced onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add 1 tbsp of grated ginger, 4 minced garlic cloves, and 1 chopped green chili. Cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Stir in 1 tsp of turmeric powder, 1 tsp of cumin seeds, and 2 bay leaves. Cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Add the soaked rice and lentils to the pot, stirring well to coat in spices.
  6. Pour in 800 ml of water and add 1 tsp of salt. Stir to combine everything in the pot.
  7. Cover the pot and cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes until the rice and lentils are tender and the water is absorbed.
  8. Remove from heat and let sit, covered for 5 minutes before serving.
