Banitsa recipe
Delicious layers of pastry and cheese, a Bulgarian delight!
Ingredients
- 400 g phyllo pastry
- 200 g feta cheese
- 200 ml yogurt
- 3 unit eggs
- 100 g butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
How to make Banitsa
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a bowl, combine 300 g of crumbled feta cheese, 200 g of yogurt, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper until smooth and well blended.
- Melt 100 g of butter in a small saucepan over low heat, ensuring it doesn't brown.
- Use a brush to coat a 20x30 cm baking dish evenly with some of the melted butter.
- Layer 10 sheets of phyllo pastry in the baking dish, brushing melted butter on each sheet as you arrange them.
- Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the layered phyllo pastry.
- Add 5 more sheets of phyllo on top, again brushing melted butter on each sheet as you go.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Let the Banitsa cool for a few minutes, then slice into squares for serving.
- Serve warm as a delightful appetizer or snack.
