Arepas recipe
Deliciously versatile cornmeal cakes from Colombia!
Ingredients
- 500 g cornmeal
- 400 ml water
- 1 tsp salt
- 200 g cheese
- 50 g butter
How to make Arepas
- In a mixing bowl, combine 500 g of cornmeal, 1 tsp of salt, and 300 ml of water; mix until a uniform dough forms.
- Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to thicken slightly and make it easier to handle.
- Form the dough into small patties about 1 cm thick; set aside on a clean surface.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt 30 g of butter until it bubbles.
- Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the skillet and let them cool slightly for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve warm, optionally stuffing them with cheese as desired.
