Bobotie recipe
A savory South African dish with a sweet twist!
Ingredients
- 500 g ground beef
- 1 unit onion
- 2 unit garlic
- 2 unit bread
- 250 ml milk
- 2 unit egg
- 2 tbsp curry powder
- 2 tbsp apricot jam
- 50 g almonds
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
How to make Bobotie
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Chop 150 g of onion and mince 2 garlic cloves before starting your dish.
- In a pan, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic in 30 g of butter over medium heat for around 5 minutes until they are soft.
- Add 500 g of ground beef to the pan and cook, breaking it apart, until it is browned all over, about 8 minutes.
- Soak 2 slices of bread in 100 ml of milk until soft, then remove and mix into the meat mixture.
- Add 10 g of curry powder, 30 g of apricot jam, 5 g of salt, and 5 g of pepper to the mixture and stir well.
- Transfer the meat mixture into the greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Beat 1 egg and mix it with the remaining apricot jam, then pour over the top of the meat mixture.
- Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes until the top is golden brown and set, checking occasionally for doneness.
