Ingredients
- 400 g masa harina
- 300 ml water
- 200 g refried beans
- 200 g queso fresco
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp oil
How to make Pupusas
- In a bowl, combine 2 cups of masa harina, 1 cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal balls, each approximately the size of a golf ball. Set aside for later use.
- Flatten each ball into a disc using your hands or a rolling pin.
- Place 2 tablespoons of refried beans and 2 tablespoons of queso fresco in the center of each disc.
- Fold the edges over the filling, sealing them tightly to prevent leakage during cooking.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering but not smoking.
- Cook each pupusa for 3-4 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip.
- Cook the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes until crispy and golden.
- Remove pupusas from the skillet and drain briefly on paper towels.
- Serve warm with curtido and salsa on the side for dipping.
