Deliciously spiced Bolivian pastries filled with goodness.
Ingredients
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 100 g butter
- 200 ml water
- 300 g ground beef
- 200 g potato
- 100 g peas
- 1 onion
- 2 hard-boiled eggs
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
How to make Salteñas
- In a mixing bowl, combine 500 g of all-purpose flour, 100 g of butter, and 200 ml of water.
- Knead the mixture until a smooth dough forms, about 5 minutes. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and heat for about 1 minute.
- Cook 300 g of ground beef with 1 chopped onion, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of pepper for about 10 minutes until browned.
- Boil 200 g of potatoes in salted water for about 10-15 minutes until tender, then drain and mash them.
- In a bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with 100 g of peas and the cooked beef mixture until combined.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough and cut into circles, about 10 cm in diameter.
- Place some filling in the center of each circle and fold over to create half-moons, pinching the edges to seal.
- Preheat the oven to 200°C and place the salteñas on a baking tray.
- Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool slightly before serving.
